Exploring Luxor's East & West Banks

January 15, 2024 • 1 min read

The Two Sides of Ancient Thebes

Luxor offers two very different experiences on each side of the Nile. The East Bank centers on the living — temples of worship, bustling markets, and modern city life. The West Bank reveals the realm of the dead — royal tombs, mortuary temples, and vast necropolises.

East Bank Highlights

  • Karnak Temple Complex — The largest religious building ever constructed, spanning 2,000 years of construction
  • Luxor Temple — Stunning at sunset when the ancient stones glow golden
  • Luxor Museum — A curated collection of Theban artifacts

West Bank Must-Sees

  1. Valley of the Kings — Home to 63 royal tombs including Tutankhamun
  2. Hatshepsut Temple (Deir el-Bahari) — A masterpiece of ancient architecture
  3. Colossi of Memnon — Two massive stone statues guarding the necropolis

Start early in the morning, carry plenty of water, and split your day by heat and crowd patterns for the best experience.
